Hunza; Place Where People Live the Longest, Disease Is Unknown

By Jeremy Carew-Reid

“Health secrets of people who live to 145 years of age” "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food" Hippocrates(460-377 B.C.)

Never have truer words been uttered. Food is an amazing healer and preventer of disease. In fact most disease is a result of faulty use of food. It has been seen time and time again in history that when traditional cultures of people have eaten natural, whole, organic foods they had excellent health, endless energy and near total freedom from disease. But when exposed to modern diet in the “developed” world which included processed, chemically treated, devitalised junk foods they started to develop endless degenerative diseases including chronic fatigue syndrome.

Shangri-La Resort

Shangrila Resort is located at about 20mns drive from Skardu city center. It's a popular tourist destination in Gilgit-Baltistan formerly called Northern Areas of Pakistan, and has a unique restaurant that is built on the fuselage of an aircraft that had crashed nearby. Established in 1983 Shangri-La was named as "heaven on earth" because of its spectacular beauty and breathtaking views and peaceful atmosphere. It is also called a place of complete bliss and delight and peace.

Shangrila was named after a book titled "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton. In the novel, the author narrates a tale in which an aeroplane crash landed near a riverbed, in the early 1920's. The surviving passengers came across some Buddhist monks from a nearby temple and sought their help. They were taken to a beautiful lamasery filled with a variety of fruits and flowers. The monks looked quite young, although they claimed to be hundreds of years old.

A popularly believed inspiration for Hilton's Shangri-La is the Hunza Valley in Pakistan, close to the Tibetan border, which Hilton visited a few years before Lost Horizon was published. Being an isolated green valley surrounded by mountains, enclosed on the western end of the Himalayas, it closely matches the description in the novel.
